About the District

The Montague Street Business Improvement District covers a three-block commercial area in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. The district includes all properties on the north side of Montague Street between Court Street and Hicks Street; on the south side, the district runs from 200 Montague Street in the east to 78 Montague Street in the west.

The mission of the Montague Street BID is to improve all aspects of the district, from beautifying the public realm to supporting our local and national retailers. We're committed to making Montague Street a great place to work, live, and shop.

BID Funding

New York City BIDs are funded through a special assessment paid by every property owner in a district. As with real estate taxes, all or a portion of the assessment may be passed on to commercial tenants, per the terms of the lease.

In the Montague Street BID, individual assessment fees are based on each property's assessed value and street frontage. The BID's total annual assessment, from payments by over 80 properties, is set by law at $124,500. The median payment in the 2007 fiscal year was $1,024.

The BID uses assessment funds to pay for a variety of local programs and supplemental services.

BID Leadership

The BID is managed by a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, run by a board of directors. Montague Street property owners, commercial tenants, and residential tenants elect their respective representatives to the board at the BID's June annual meeting. All elected directors serve on a volunteer basis for two-year terms.

In addition, appointed representatives of public officials and community non-profits also serve on the board. Day-to-day operations are overseen by an executive director, appointed by the board of directors.
